How to do Self-care Like a Unicorn

I'm sure to the average adult this sounds insane but for a mom with a "what about me?" 4 year old, this is freaking genius! I don't always make time for self-care or "spa days" but when I do them, I like to do them at home and usually my daughter is with me. Wanting her to understand that self-care is important, I let her participate from time to time. We soak our feet and paint nails, she uses my jade roller (rolling my eyes), and we relax and watch Netflix together! It's good bonding time for us, so I started paying more attention to what products I could use to make it more kid friendly.

My first thought was about how she has eczema and sensitive skin so I wanted to make sure the products we used were kid friendly. I did a lot of searching on affordable skin care lines with more natural ingredients. Target.com now provides drug facts for the majority of their beauty and skin care products so it made decision making a lot easier.

Shower and Moisturizing

We are obsessed with the smell of lavender so when I saw that Burt's Bees had a calming lavender and honey body wash I thought it would be perfect for us! They had a hand cream that goes with it but I didn't see a body lotion so I looked at the milk and honey body lotion for pairing. Unicorns can't just look good, they have to smell good too! Not to mention, the fact that they contain more natural ingredients is a perk!

Fancy Footwork

This is Bailey's favorite part of spa day! We usually add epsom salt (a cheaper and more natural alternative) to our water but to make it more fun, I'm going to use a Unicorn Bath Bomb by Da Bomb Bath Fizzers. She will get a kick out of the colorful fizzing and there's suppose to be a surprise element inside!

After soaking, we paint toes and sometimes nails! Bailey likes rainbow nails so we paint each finger and toe a different color. I use brands like Piggy Paint and Zoya because they don't contain all of the harsh chemicals that could harm her. Piggy Paint is designed specifically for kids and they have a decent range or colors.

Face Mask

I don't let Bailey do face masks so she will usually find something else to do for the 15-20 minutes like draw or make rainbow bead bracelets! This time I plan on using the Yes To Unicorn mask. I always put on a face moisturizer or oil afterwards so my face doesn't feel so dry and it gives me a little bit of a glow.

Lip Service

I am a lip gloss collector but at home I like to use Vaseline. For my unicorn look I decided to go with Vaseline's Gold dust lip jelly. It feels like regular Vaseline but has a hint of gold glitter and pink tint. For Bailey, she prefers Lip Smakers because of all the colors and flavors.

Relaxtion

This is where the fun really begins! I let her pick the movie (one I can bare to sit through) and we get all our snacks together (found some unicorn inspired snacks on Pinterest) and sit in bed. She calls it a slumber party even though there's no slumbering on her part.

This isn't just for mom's with daughters or unicorn loving kids. It's simply just taking whatever your kid is into and finding ways to include it into self-care day. Boys can do bath bombs and dinosaurs and chapstick. The important thing is to just spend time together and teaching the importance of self care!

If anyone tries this, let me know how you altered it! Did you do a girls night with cocktails and your girl's fave movie or show? Did you make it a date night thing with your partner? I wanna know!

Happy self-caring loves!

With Love,

Micole Elise
