Curly Credits

Within the past year I officially decided to like my hair in its curly natural state more than the flatironed state. I've always gone back and forth between the two and still do but I have finally learned to love my curls and learned to work with them, not against them. It is still a struggle for me because I haven't found the right products and so I spend a lot of time on Instagram and Youtube looking for tutorials and reviews. What I have found is that there are at least 4 things to think about when going naturally curly.

1. What type of curl pattern do you have?

When I first started Googling "curl pattern", I had a hard time figuring out what mine was. Every chart I looked at was different. Eventually I found myself falling into the 3s category but then had to take some time to figure out what letter I was. I finally settled on C. Now I could look up 3C and see what type of products they were using. I would recommend really looking at a lot of different pattern charts before settling and be honest about your hair. Is it chemically treated and forcing you to believe that it is another pattern type? Analyze the size and shapes because you may have 2 different curl types. My daughter does!

2. What products will work for you?

I still have not figured this one out. There are a million brands and even the ladies on the tutorials use multiple brands and products unless they have sponsors. Once you decide to try a brand, you feel obligated to use only the products from that brand until you figure out what you like and don't like. There's shampoo, pre-poo, conditioners, leave ins, moisturizers, oils, creams/puddings, sprays, masks, the list goes on. How are we suppose to choose where to start? Better yet, how can we afford all these products and what do we do with them when we don't like them and have 3/4 of a bottle left? Do you're research and watch the reviews for these products.

All products pictured above can be found on their corresponding sites!

3. What is your hair routine?

Every curly head diva has a routine for their hair and they all differ. Once you find your products, create your routine. Make sure you are using the right wide tooth combs and brushes (I love the Denman brush). The right tools are just as important as the right products. I will say that even though I haven't found a routine yet, I do know it's important to protect your curls at night too. Loosely pull hair into a pineapple ponytail and wrap with a silk scarf or use a silk pillowcase so you don't dry your curls out.

4. What color and cut is best for you?

It is totally up to you if you like to color your hair. I haven't ever done any chemical treatments on my hair (perms or relaxers) but I have always played with color. I have had a vibrant red (now a pale rose gold red) for the past year and due to pregnancy, I can not do any color treatments yet. I would like to try an ash medium to light brown like my daughters hair (similar to Zendaya's hair color in the pic below). In a dream world I would have the Jennifer Lopez color look but I can't go too blonde or my hair will break off. I also love a good mocha brown too! In terms of cut, I suggest going to someone that specializes in working with curly hair. They are going to be able to shape your hair just right for your face and give you the layers you need! Deva curl has several salons that can be found on their website and they really take everything into consideration when styling your hair! If you are like me and need inspiration for your curls, then you'll fall in love with the ladies below and their lioness manes! I follow them all on Instagram and often view their Youtube channels for help with my hair. You can find them on Instagram by their handles!

I want to keep sharing my journey of conquering the curls so I will keep you updated on what i find!

With Love,
